What is a total hip replacement?
This involves removing part of the thigh bone including the ‘ball’ component of the joint and replacing it with an artificial ball. The surface of the socket is then fitted with an artificial socket.
Artificial hip joints can be made from plastic (polyethylene) and metal (a metal ball with a plastic socket), ceramic-on ceramic, ceramic on plastic and metal-on-metal.
Some joints are fixed in place with a type of cement and others are just treated to encourage bone to grow on them and bond naturally.
