Hips and knees are the two joints in the body which are most likely to give you problems.

Whether it’s due to sports injuries, getting older, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout or an accident, many people find themselves experiencing hip and knee pain and in some cases may need surgery to replace the joint or repair a ligament.

To give you some idea of the scale of the problem, latest figures from the National Joint Registry show there were 160,000 total hip and knee replacements in a year.

The good news is that joint replacements are some of the most successful types of operation performed by surgeons. In most cases, inserting an artificial joint can  relieve pain and improve mobility. Implants typically last up to 15 years – longer in some cases.
